Why I’m a Feminist: 2015 updated version

Last May I made a blog post entitled ‘Why I’m a feminist’. I was re-reading it this morning when I realised that, to my dismay, nothing has changed. The list is just as valid one whole year later. Now, I know it is only one year, and in some ways equality has progressed in the past year (take equal marriage in the U.S., that has undoubtedly progressed – somewhat) but it’s been a whole year. More than one thing should have changed! Real changes does take time, and laws and mindsets cannot be changed overnight. But after one year, it seems there are even more reasons that I am a feminist, even more reasons that I believe whole-heartedly in gender equality. So I bring to you my 2015 updated list of reasons why I’m a feminist…

I am a feminist because dress codes suggest women’s bodies are shameful and should be covered.
I am a feminist because those dress codes imply that it is okay for adult teachers to sexualise underage girls.
I am a feminist because children should not be told what kind of toys to play with.
I am a feminist because it has got to the point where even pens are gendered. What, can my feeble female hands not hold a man-sized pen?
I am a feminist because colours do not have genders, yet people still think they are synonymous.
I am a feminist because people should be able to dress however they want, regardless of gender.
I am a feminist because every picture of women in the media is likely manipulated, and gives unrealistic standards to girls.
I am a feminist because a 2009 study revealed that nearly half of three-six year old girls worry about being ‘fat’.
I am a feminist because all the worst insults i.e. ‘pussy’ or ‘c*nt’ are related to women.
I am a feminist because girls are told that losing their virginity is supposed to hurt and be bloody – that’s scientifically incorrect.
I am a feminist because men and children get raped too, but never asked what they were wearing.
I am a feminist because young boys are considered ‘gay’ or a loser if they don’t want to have sex.
I am a feminist because ‘gay’ is still used as an insult.
I am a feminist because there is still unequal pay in jobs.
I am a feminist because there are still laws preventing women from showing their bodies.
I am a feminist because if a woman enjoys sex she is a ‘slut’ or a ‘whore’, but if a man does it he is a ‘lad’.
I am a feminist because people still believe bisexuality, asexuality and being transgender don’t exist.
I am a feminist because women had to give their lives before we were allowed to vote.
I am a feminist because people still believe women should be the stay-at-home parent.
I am a feminist because men don’t get paternal pay.
I am a feminist because catcalling and street harrassment are not compliments.
I am a feminist because in the UK over 230 women are raped each day.
I am a feminist because only one in every hundred rape accusations leads to a conviction.
I am a feminist because some people think you cannot be raped by your partner.
I am a feminist because women’s bodies are used to sell everything.
I am a feminist because it is considered ‘wrong’ to breastfeed in public.
I am a feminist because unshaven women shock and terrify people.
I am a feminist because it is 2015 and we are still so far from worldwide marriage equality.
I am a feminist because if a man takes charge he’s just ‘doing his job’ but if a woman does she is being ‘bossy’.
I am a feminist because boys are shamed for being openly emotional.
I am a feminist because women are still considered weak despite the fact they push people out of their vagina.
I am a feminist because cultural appropriation is not the same as cultural appreciation.
I am a feminist because only 5% of mainstream 2013 films starred a woman of colour.
I am a feminist because as of 2012 there is a 5:1 ratio of men:women working in the film industry.
I am a feminist because I know it will be hard for me to break into that industry, partially because I’m female and gay.
I am a feminist because women and young girls should not be married without consent.
I am a feminist because women should not be afraid to walk down the street on their own.
I am a feminist because when I went to university I should have been given a good luck card, not a rape alarm.
I am a feminist because women are told that if they’re raped, they should yell “fire” not “rape”, as more people will help.
I am a feminist because in Saudi Arabia women aren’t allowed to drive.
I am a feminist because gender is a socially constructed concept.
I am a feminist because someone’s race, gender, sexuality or class does not determine their humanity.
I am a feminist because the reality is people would take this post more seriously if it was coming from a man.
I am a feminist because it is 2015 and I still need to explain why I am a feminist.
I am a feminist because it is still considered a dirty word.
I am a feminist because I believe in equality for everyone.
